Antique Cast Iron Arched Fireplace Frame & Cover - Antique Cast Iron Arched Fireplace Frame & Cover, Victorian-style, decorative frame that sat inside a larger wooden or marble mantle piece, enclosing the open brick firebox or coal grate, features a classic semi-circular arch with deep layered stepped moldings and mounting brackets along the rear inner edges to secure it in place, and a matching cast iron summer cover, used to block off open fireplace hearths during the spring and summer months, prevented birds, bats,and unwanted drafts from the chimney, hid the messy-ash-stained interior of the firebox when not in use, the openwork filigree pattern was designed to slide directly into the matching surround and to cover large gravity-fed coal furnace vents in walls or floors, casting appears intact with no obvious breaks, heavy layer of surface rust, grime and oxidized patina, superficial rust rather than deep, pitting corrosion, see photos.
