1880's 36-39 star flag star US flags (3) - 1. 19th Century American Parade 39 Stars Flag. Good condition with some tears including one along the stick holding the flag, some dirt, and small holes. Commemorating Washington's Birthday celebration in 1889. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was common practice to print text directly on to the stripes of standard American Parade flags to celebrate political campaigns, veteran reunions, or prominent social events. This flag is for Washington's birthday 22Feb1889 and has 1889, The Bachelors and Benedicts Washington's Birthday printed on the last 3 white stripes. The phrase Bachelors and Benedicts was used by social clubs, fraternal, and civic organizations to separate their members into 2 groups unmarried me (Bachelors) and married men (Benedicts, based on the character Benedict from Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing). Flag: 12” wide, 17.5” long including stick, stick is 13” long, 0.5” diameter.. 2. 36 Star US Flag. Good condition with some staining and small holes. As with flag above (1.) this flag was officially used 04July1865 - 04July1867. The 36 star flag became the official US flag 04July1865 celebrating the admission of Nevada into the Union. This was the 1st official flag adopted after the conclusion of the American Civil War. Andrew Johnson was the only US President to serve entirely under this official flag variant. A 36 star flag was used to cushion President Abraham Lincoln's head on the night of his assassination at Ford's Theatre roughly 3 months before the design became officially recognized by law. 36 star flags were flown during a time of historical significance: marking the end of the Civil War, the mourning of Abraham Lincoln, and the early years of reconstruction. 24” wide, 32” long. 3. 39 star American Parade Flag. Good condition with some dirt, small holes, and tears. This flag is an unofficial historical anomaly because the US never actually had 39 states. These flags were produced by speculative manufacturers at 2 times: The 1876 Centennial when flag makers gambled hat Colorado and the Dakota Territory would be admitted to the Union but only Colorado was as the 38th state; and the 1889 Statehood Rush when manufacturers anticipated that the Dakota as the 39th state but Congress split admitting North Dakota and South Dakota on 02Nov1889 making 40 states. Because official statehood changes only occurred on the following 04July the 39 star flags were obsolete before they could become official, making them a mistake. 15” wide, 24” long.
