Bidspirit auction | Indian Mughal Era Pata Sword

Indian Mughal Era Pata Sword - This classic Indian pata (gauntlet sword) provides a direct window into the martial traditions of the Indian subcontinent, particularly the Mughal era and the Maratha Empire where such distinctive weapon systems served as the primary close-combat arm for elite cavalry and nobility. Master smiths and artisans of regions like Rajasthan and northern India poured immense skill into these arms, utilizing robust steel blades riveted directly into an integrated half-gauntlet hilt designed for devastating cutting strokes and forearm defense. This piece features a strong steel blade with a rounded tip, complemented by a forearm guard heavily chased with detailed floral scrollwork and naturalistic hunting scenes depicting hounds pursuing large beasts. Physically, the piece shows a dark, aged patina with expected oxidation, pitting, and surface wear consistent with age, along with a minor nick on the otherwise sharp edge.
