WWII Smoking Set - WWII Smoking Set in a wooden glove box featuring a decorative Flemish Art style floral or leaf pattern (Edwardian-era Flemish pyrography box) with velvet lining. The box was specifically repurposed as a personalized pipe smoking and vanity case. Very good condition. On the back is handwritten text 25.12.1943 (25Dec1943 date in European format Day / Month / Year) Christmas Day, over Kalss A., over #296.184 (military service or registry identification number). Stamp stamped on buckles of box are a triangle consisting of stylized interlocking letters FAC for Flemish Art Company manufacturer for design #682 Glove Box. Contents of the box include: a leather pipe pouch with 2 insignia runes of the German Schutzstaffel (SS); WWII German bakelite (synthetic plastic used by the German military during WWII due to its durability and resistance to heat) pocket lighter, the cap has monogram HK for German manufacturer Heckler & Koch; a briarwood Billiard style smoking pipe (Alois Kalss preferred pipes) favored by officers and service members during WWII; cigarette holder; and WWII German Souvenir Cigarette Case made from marbled pearlescent celluloid plastic made to look like mother-of-pearl, it has an emblem depicting an industrial cityscape with active smokestacks framed inside a geometric Art Deco blue shield, banner text below the graphic LUDWIGSHAPEN A. RH (Lugwigshafen am Rhein a German port city along the Rhine River), the reverse side of the case shows a dual shield emblem representing the coat of arms of Ludwigshafen am Rhein; the case is entirely packed with what seems to be original tobacco cigarettes. A personalized such as this would be purchased by or gifted to service members in Germany. This case appears to have been a gift from his crew to Alois Kalss. 9.5” long, 4.75” wide, 1.75” tall.
