This is a high-precision naval telescope manufactured by the Bausch & Lomb Optical Co. under contract for the U.S. Navy Bureau of Ordnance. The instrument is a Mark XXVI, Mod 3, a heavy-duty optical sight typically utilized on naval deck guns, specifically the 3-inch/50-caliber dual-purpose gun mounts common during WWI. The body is constructed of cast alloy with a textured black ”crinkle” enamel finish, designed for durability in high-corrosion maritime environments. It features a cross-body ”T” configuration with integrated brass adjustment rings and a rotating eyepiece. The primary brass sleeve is stamped with significant patent dates: November 1, 1904, and January 11, 1916. The original brass identification plate is present and legible, bearing the Navy’s ”anchor” proof mark and the initials ”J.H.M.”, identifying the inspector as Commander John H. Moore, a senior official for the Bureau of Ordnance during the 1917–1918 production peak. The item is in Very Good original condition. It exhibits character-appropriate service wear, including: Minor thinning and paint loss to the black enamel finish, exposing the metal substrate. Light surface oxidation on non-coated metal surfaces. Moderate ”patina” and minor abrasions on the brass sleeve and adjustment rings.
