HOLD 1861 Patent George Hathaway CW Writing Kit - 1861 Patent George Hathaway Civil War Writing Kit, this exceptional piece of Union Army history is a George Hathaway patent portable writing case, dated December 24, 1861. Known to collectors as a ”slat-back” or ”roll-up” desk, this private-purchase item was a favorite for soldiers in the field. The kit features a series of wooden slats backed by black oilcloth that unroll to create a firm writing surface, while the top consists of a cylindrical wooden housing with a crisp ”PAT’D DEC. 24. 1861” stamp on the central brace. Most notably, this example remains complete with its original internal tin cylinder used for storing pens and ink, a component that is frequently missing from surviving specimens. The brass latches remain functional, and the overall condition is excellent for its age; the wood retains a warm patina, the tin shows minor oxidation but remains structurally sound, and the oilcloth backing is intact with only minor shelf wear and scuffing. Case H 1.5”, W 8.5”, D 1.5”; Board W 5.5”, L 8.5”. Please see photos for condition.
