Indian Wars & Span-Am Unit-Marked Group - This historically layered grouping represents a transition from the Indian Wars (c. 1870s-1880s) to the Spanish-American War (c. 1898). The focal point is a rare Infantry hunting horn patch; unlike more common bullion examples, this is hand-embroidered in white cotton thread—a specific ”field” or ”fatigue” style intended for rugged service on the M1872 or M1883 campaign hat. It features a central star, typically denoting a Brigade headquarters or senior recruit assignment. This is paired with an exceptionally specific 4th Service Company Signal Corps wreath insignia, representing the specialized units that deployed to Puerto Rico in 1898. The group includes Quartermaster Department (QMD) wreath pins, a period whistle, and brass eagle buttons with clear Scovill and Steele & Johnson backmarks. The items exhibit a rich, authentic patina and honest wear; the cotton embroidery remains remarkably white, while the wool backing shows expected minor moth-tracking and edge fraying.
