WWI Imperial German Iron Cross 2nd Class - WWI Imperial German Iron Cross 2nd Class (Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse). Good condition. Instituted by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1914. The small suspension ring at the top shows this medal was originally designed to hang from a ribbon. The Imperial Crown located at the top arm symbolizes the German Empire, the W in the center is for Kaiser Wilhelm II who was the ruling Emperor at the outbreak of WWI, the date 1914 located at the bottom arm marks the year this version of the award was established. On the reverse the crown at the top symbolizes the Prussian monarchy, the monogram FW standards for King Friedrich Wilhelm III who originally instituted the award, the centerpiece is a 3 leaf spray of oak leaves representing strength and heroism, and at the bottom is the date 1813 for the original founding date of the medal during the Napoleonic Wars. There is a maker's mark on the suspension ring of KAG. The medal is magnetic. 2.5” by 1.75”. Please see photos.
