WWII German Wound Badge Black (3rd Class) - WWII German Wound Badge Black (3rd Class). Good condition, heavily painted exposing underlying base. Similar in function to the US Purple Heart. Awarded to military personnel, auxiliary, and later in the war, civilians who were injured by hostile enemy action or suffered severe frostbite during operations. The pebbled background has been referred to as Chaos Pattern / Chaos Dot / Chaotic Dot background. This badge is a hollow back or die stamped type. Black Wound Badges were mostly stamped out of thin sheet metal (like brass, tombak, or steel). The Chaos Pattern on the front indicates the maker of this badge is Hauptmunzamt Wien. 1.75” long, 1.5” wide. Please see photos.
