Civil War/Indian War Era Officer's Kepi Cap - This French chasseur or Zouave-style officer's kepi or forage cap features a red wool upper crown with woven bullion tape welt/piping and a dark navy or black wool band. Outfitted with a woven metallic cord chinstrap tied in a decorative square knot and secured by dual post-Civil War General Service eagle side buttons, a black leather visor displaying heavy age-related crazing, and an interior russet leather sweatband. The black polished cotton lining retains a faint silver-white maker's mark consisting of an oval stamp featuring an eagle with raised wings holding a wreath above the company text, identifying it as an origin piece by Chicago Uniform & Cap Co. of 50 W. Madison St., Chicago, IL. The piece exhibits age-appropriate wear throughout, including significant cracking to the visor finish, light surface soil, minor wool wear, loose interior lining stitching, and dry flaking to the leather sweatband.
