Civil War Kurz & Allison Assault on Ft Sanders - This chromolithograph titled “Assault on Fort Sanders” was created by Kurz and Allison, major publishers of chromolithographs in the late 19th century [1891] . Based in Chicago, they built their reputation on large prints depicting battles of the American Civil War. In all, a set of 36 battle scenes were published from designs by Louis Kurz, a veteran of the war. While highly inaccurate, they appealed to people’s patriotic emotions of the day. They also created prints for later conflicts such as the Spanish American War, the Philippine Insurrection and the Russo-Japanese War. Measuring 31” x 24” matted, the print measures approx. 28” x 22” under the matting. A dent in the foam core backing shows on the matting at the base. No damage to the actual print inside. The Battle of Fort Sanders was the crucial engagement of the Knoxville Campaign of the American Civil War, on November 29, 1863 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Confederate General James Longstreet failed to break through the defensive lines of Union General Ambrose Burnside, resulting in lopsided casualties, and the Siege of Knoxville entered its final days. This print was part of the Civil War and Indian War display at Donley’s Wild West Town Museum for 45 years.
