Zon-O-Phone Concert Grand Disc Phonograph - The Zon-O-Phone Concert Grand is a premium front-mount machine produced between 1901 and 1905. Manufactured by the Universal Talking Machine Company in New York, it represents the pinnacle of the company's independent design era before its acquisition and eventual assimilation by Eldridge Johnson's Victor Talking Machine Company. This early version is heavily influenced by the famous 1900 Zon-O-Phone Type A featuring a tiered oak original finish cabinet with beveled glass panes on either side. It has a 9-inch diameter turntable with original felt to accommodate larger discs. The spring loaded pin on the turntable is intact. Because the cabinet base was originally sized for smaller turntables, the standard stop lever couldn't reach the outer edge and engineers had to design it to engage a special lip on the underside of the platter instead. It has a V Concert reproducer. Plating on the all original parts ranges from good to VG. The machine winds and runs. The all brass horn measures 29.5” long with a 14” diameter bell and is in VG condition. The thumbscrew on the connector is original. Because the huge brass horn extends so far forward and its weight threatened to tip the small cabinet over, Zon-O-Phone added a vertical support rod midway on the cast horn support to stabilize the machine. Overall a very nice and desirable machine. Case measures 11” wide, 12” deep,8” tall. From the William Kocher collection.
