Tamaya & Co. Japanese WWII Theodolite - This rare WWII-era Japanese theodolite, manufactured by the renowned Tamaya & Co. in Ginza, Tokyo (Serial No. 31), is a precision surveying instrument modeled after the German Hildebrandt design. During the 1930s and 40s, Tamaya served as a primary optical contractor for the Imperial Japanese military, benefiting from technology transfers with German firms following the Tripartite Pact. This ”8cm” instrument (denoted by the Kanji ”??” on the case) was essential for field topography and artillery positioning. As a low-serial-number early-war production model, it represents a high-water mark for Japanese military optics before late-war material shortages. The set is exceptionally complete, featuring the original wooden carrying case with its working locking key, the internal technical data sheet, a David White Co. compass, and a plumb bob. Market data for similar Tamaya military instruments suggests a strong collector valuation, with complete boxed sets representing the top tier of the category.
