19th C. Ramsden Friction Electrostatic Generator - This exceptional 19th-century Ramsden-style friction electrostatic generator features a large, rotating glass disc supported by a handsome, solid mahogany double-pillar frame. A superb example of early scientific demonstrational apparatus, the machine utilizes brass collecting combs with sharp point-collectors, a curved brass prime conductor mounted on a 17.5” insulating clear glass support rod, and a manually operated crank handle with a turned dark wood grip. Rubbing pads lined with leather or felt at the top and bottom of the upright pillars generate a static charge against the rotating glass wheel when the handle is turned. The instrument appears substantially complete and well-preserved, showcasing a warm, untouched patina on the brass elements along with expected minor surface scratches, dust accumulation, scuffs, and small dings to the mahogany base and framework consistent with age and institutional or classroom use.
