Bidspirit auction | Victorian Hair Wreath Shadow Box
Victorian Hair Wreath Shadow Box Memento - This striking piece is a premier example of 19th-century Victorian mourning and sentimental art, featuring an intricately woven human hair wreath mounted on a vibrant red velvet background within a custom-built shadow box case. The assembly includes a vintage photograph of a woman wearing a period dress and hat—with a signature reading ”Remmer's” visible on the bottom right—accompanied by a loose lock of hair and a companion envelope inscribed ”mother's hair” stored in a modern protective bag. The wooden shadow box retains its original metal hook latch, side hinges, and an authentic aged patina on the backing board, making it an evocative family heirloom from the late 1800s to early 1900s era. Regarding condition, the primary glass pane from the front hinged door is completely missing, the velvet lining shows expected dust accumulation and minor fading, and the exterior wood has scattered light scratches, scuffs, and edge wear consistent with age, though the internal hair work remains remarkably intact and stable. H 31.5”, W 18.5”, D 5.25”. Please see photos for condition. From the Dale Beeks collection.
