Antique Bausch & Lomb Sextant Model 24 - This Bausch & Lomb Optical Co. Model 24 sextant, identified as a ”Triple Alliance” instrument from Rochester, NY, circa 1911, features a black-finished brass frame with a 7.5-inch radius and an inlaid silver scale. Representing the peak of maritime navigation during the Pre-WWI and ”Great White Fleet” era, this instrument was a primary tool for celestial navigation aboard merchant and naval vessels before the widespread adoption of radio direction finding. The set includes three telescopes of varying powers, a pinhole sighting tube, and multiple colored glass filters, all housed in a fitted mahogany case with silver-tone hardware. The instrument is designed for readings to 10 seconds and bears the serial number 87881. The sextant exhibits surface wear and brassing on the frame and telescope edges consistent with age and professional sea service; the mahogany case shows scattered scuffs and surface scratches, and while the decorative latches are present, the key for the locking mechanism is missing.
