Bidspirit auction | Antique Bausch & Lomb Brass

Antique Bausch & Lomb Brass Microscope - This exquisite 19th-century scientific instrument represents a golden era of American optical engineering. Manufactured by the Bausch & Lomb Optical Co. of Rochester, New York, this compound microscope features a heavy Y-shaped base and a polished brass and nickel-plated finish. Notable patent dates of October 3, 1876, and December 25, 1877, are visible on the limb and the mechanical stage, marking it as a significant early model—likely a variation of the ”Physician's” or ”Professional” model from the late 1870s to early 1880s. The set is remarkably complete, housed in its original fitted mahogany carrying case with a functional locking mechanism and key, and includes a small drawer and internal racks for additional eyepieces and objectives. The instrument shows a charming aged patina with some localized pitting and wear to the nickel and brass surfaces consistent with historical use. The wooden case exhibits minor scuffs and surface scratches, and one internal wooden lens rack is currently detached but present. H 14”, W 8.25”, D 8.25”. From the collection of Dale Beeks.
