Bidspirit auction | Bausch & Lomb Model 50

Bausch & Lomb Model 50 Railroad Transit - This professional-grade ”Railroad” Transit, Model 50, was manufactured by the renowned Bausch & Lomb Optical Co. of Rochester, NY, around 1909. A quintessential tool of early 20th-century American infrastructure, this instrument features a 9.75” telescope, a 3.875” compass, and a 5” vertical circle. It is constructed of brass with a contrasting black-finished standard, displaying the high-caliber craftsmanship expected from B&L. The unit bears serial number 7791 and includes its original patent dates from 1903 and 1904. It is accompanied by a protective lens cap, a sunshade, and a later-added plywood storage crate for transport. The instrument is in good vintage condition with expected wear to the brass and black finishes, some oxidation on the silvered scales, and minor surface scuffs consistent with field use; the optics and mechanical movements appear intact but have not been professionally calibrated. H 15.25”, W 10.5”, D 10.5”. From the collection of Dale Beeks. Please see photos for condition.
