c. 1910 Buff & Buff Surveyor's Transit - A fine early 20th-century brass and blackened metal surveyor's transit, Model 1-B, manufactured by the Buff & Buff Manufacturing Company of Boston, Massachusetts. This historic engineering instrument features a 4.25-inch silvered compass face signed ”Buff & Buff Mfg. Co. Boston, U.S.A.” alongside serial number 9514 and patent date Nov. 13, 1900. Built with a 6.25-inch horizontal limb reading to 1' and an 11.5-inch telescope tube, the transit is housed in its original front-loading fitted mahogany wooden carrying case complete with its top leather handle, front hook latches, keyhole escutcheon, and hand-inked inventory numbers. The transit instrument is in very good condition, presenting bright polished brass finish and clean components; the wooden carrying case exhibits authentic age-appropriate wear including finish loss, scuffs, edge wear, and cracking to the leather handle.
