Bidspirit auction | Bausch & Lomb No. 55

Bausch & Lomb No. 55 Engineer's Transit - This is an exceptional ”Engineers” Model No. 55 transit/tachymeter produced by the Bausch & Lomb Optical Co. of Rochester, NY, dating to approximately 1915. This precision instrument features a 5.5-inch horizontal limb, a 5-inch vertical circle, and a 3.875-inch compass with a variation plate, all supported by a signature ”U” standard. Constructed from a professional mix of brass and aluminum, it retains its original 11.25-inch telescope with gradienter. This set is remarkably complete, including the original mahogany carrying case (serial #10766) and a tall wooden tripod with distinctive cutouts. The transit displays an honest patina with some paint loss on the aluminum standards and surface wear to the brass elements. The mahogany case is in good structural condition but is missing the key, and the leather carrying strap requires repair. Notably, the plumb bob chain component is present but is broken and requires repair. Overall unit on tripod: H 72”, W 24”, D 24”. Case: H 17”, W 8.25”, D 11.75”. ”. From the collection of Dale Beeks.
