Bausch & Lomb Antique Brass Microscope - This exceptional late 19th to early 20th-century monocular petrographic microscope is a magnificent testament to the precision craftsmanship of the Bausch & Lomb Optical Co. of Rochester, N.Y. Made from beautifully polished brass with a heavy horseshoe base, this sophisticated instrument features a rotating stage with fine degree markings, multiple objective lenses on a revolving nosepiece, an intricate substage condenser assembly and an adjustable plane-concave mirror. Accompanied by two wooden accessory blocks housing extra brass-capped objectives and ocular eyepieces, and oil container, the entire set fits securely inside its original fitted mahogany transport box equipped with a robust brass carrying handle. This complete assembly represents a premier era of American scientific instrument manufacturing. Objectively assessing the item's physical condition from the photos, the microscope shows minor surface tarnishing, light scratches to the brass finish, and minor dust accumulation on the optics appropriate for its age, while the wooden case exhibits typical wear, surface scuffs, a minor split in the door face, a lock mechanism that is loose from the case (and parts inside), and a significant gouge near the lock opening and door edge; mechanical adjustments appear functional but have not been tested for modern calibration.
