Antique Bausch & Lomb Research Microscope - This exceptional Bausch & Lomb monocular research microscope, serial no. 32845, is a premier example of early 20th-century optical engineering, dating to approximately 1900–1901. This specific instrument represents the dawn of a legendary partnership; the base is prominently marked for the Arthur H. Thomas Co. of Philadelphia, PA, a firm founded in 1900 by former Queen & Co. employees with the direct backing and presence of Henry Bausch. This ”Philadelphia Connection” marks the microscope as one of the first high-end research tools distributed by the now-iconic scientific supplier. The brass-and-black-enamel instrument is remarkably complete, featuring a triple nosepiece, a sophisticated mechanical stage, and its original fitted mahogany case with the key. Further enhancing its provenance is a 1945 service receipt from Erb & Gray of Los Angeles, indicating over four decades of professional maintenance. The brass displays a warm, authentic patina with minor surface oxidation; the mahogany case shows age-appropriate scuffs and a vintage ”Wool” label but remains structurally excellent.
