Antique Vacuum Fountain Apparatus - Emerging from the fascinating realm of late 19th-century physics instruction, this antique pneumatic demonstration apparatus is classically known as a ”fountain in vacuo” (fountain in a vacuum). Designed as an educational tool to visually demonstrate fluid dynamics and atmospheric pressure, the device features a tall, stacked assembly of hand-blown glass vessels. The upper portion consists of an elongated, bulbous 16-inch glass receiver chamber that tapers toward the top, which seamlessly links via a central brass collar to a slender, 10-inch glass support column. Highlighting its practical design for laboratory use, the upper glass chamber cleanly unscrews from the threaded brass fitting at the lower base. The entire assembly is sturdily mounted to a heavy, turned mahogany wooden base. Unsigned by a specific manufacturer but displaying the fine craftsmanship indicative of Victorian-era scientific suppliers, this piece serves as a striking testament to early classroom technology. A physical assessment reveals the glass components are structurally sound and intact, showing no chips, cracks, or heavy clouding, with only minor interior dust and light surface residue consistent with age.
