Keuffel & Esser DARAD Bubble Sextant - This remarkable mid-century precision instrument is a Keuffel & Esser ”DARAD” model bubble sextant, specifically designed for U.S. Army and Navy aerial and marine navigation. Manufactured in Hoboken, New Jersey, this ”Type A” instrument (Serial No. 85500) features a sophisticated internal artificial horizon—a ”sensitive level” or bubble—allowing for accurate altitude readings of celestial bodies even when the natural horizon is obscured. The unit is constructed of blackened brass and aluminum with high-quality optics, housed in its original industrial-grey steel carrying case with a specialized internal mounting bracket. The accompanying ”Aircraft Equipment Condition Tag” from the Alameda Naval Air Station, dated January 1952, adds significant provenance to this piece of military history. The instrument appears to be in excellent vintage condition with smooth mechanical movements and intact optics, while the steel case shows expected age-related paint loss and surface oxidation. H 12”, W 10.25”, D 8.5”. From the collection of Dale Beeks. Please see photos for condition.
