Bidspirit auction | Brass Marine Sextant in Box-Calcutta
Brass Marine Sextant in Box-Calcutta - This exceptional late 19th to early 20th-century marine sextant exemplifies the precision of British nautical engineering, featuring a handsome brass frame, an inlaid silver or ivory scale, a turned wooden handle, and multiple accompanying optical scopes. The inside lid features a label for ”Henry Hughes & Son, Marine Opticians, 59 Fenchurch Street, London,” alongside a retail/repair label from ”Jas. Murray, Chronometer, Watch and Clock Makers” located at 14 Government Place, Calcutta, adding incredible colonial maritime provenance. Physically, the brass shows a deep, authentic aged patina with minor oxidation, and the red velvet-lined fitted mahogany case displays minor exterior paint specks, surface scratches, and typical scuffs consistent with active sea service; the case lock lacks a key, though the set remains visually complete. H 5.25”, W 10.5”, D 9.25”. From the collection of Dale Beeks. Please see photos for condition.
