Keuffel & Esser Brass Alidade w/ Case - This exceptional Keuffel & Esser Co. high post plane table alidade, Model 5205, is an outstanding piece of late 19th-century engineering history. Produced circa 1892 in New York, NY, this instrument features a heavy brass construction with a dark brass finish, a 11.5” telescope, crossed level vials, and an 18.375” blade featuring distinctive ”lightning” circular cutout holes. The instrument is hand-inscribed with the inventory or assembly marking ”2E49” on the telescope barrel and base. It comes housed in its original fitted oak wood transit case, complete with green protective felt lining, exterior hardware latches, and a heavy leather transport strap buckle. Visually, the piece is in very good condition; the original brass finish on the telescope remains excellent, showing a handsome, undisturbed patina and minor surface tarnish throughout, while the engine turning on the base blade exhibits typical age-appropriate wear. The wooden case displays light surface scuffs and minor wood chips at the edges, and the exterior leather strap shows moderate cracking and weathering; please note that the key for the integrated case lock is missing.
