Antique Mahogany Birdcage Tilt-Top Table - This exceptional mahogany tilt-top table stands as a classic testament to late 18th to early 19th-century Chippendale-inspired design, featuring a beautifully grained, solid mahogany round top supported by a traditional four-column ”birdcage” mechanism that allows the top to both rotate and tilt vertically. The central turned pedestal column descends into a robust tripod base terminating in classic snake or pad feet, indicative of fine period craftsmanship. A close examination of the mechanical elements—reveals a central brass latch assembly on the underside that remains fully present and operational, though it functions without a spring assist under pressure. A remarkable historical detail includes a removable, loose wooden wedge key component, which is slotted within the birdcage block assembly and serves to lock the mechanism securely. Objectively, the table presents in good antique condition overall, showing typical expected surface wear, minor edge scuffs, and dust accumulation in the crevices of the turned pillars. The table top surface exhibits a notable silhouette of a pair of scissors, this marking leaves no physical indentation or texture when handled, indicating it stems from surface oils or localized finish discoloration over its long history rather than a burn.
