Krüss in Hamburg, Germany. Founded in 1796, Krüss became a global leader in optical engineering, winning numerous awards at World’s Fairs for their ”Institut Optisches.” This example, likely from the Professor Hugo Krüss era (late 1800s), is crafted from heavy lacquered brass with a blackened cast-metal tripod base. It features a central rotating stage with a finely engraved silvered scale, flanked by two adjustable telescopes—a collimator and an observation telescope—mounted on radial arms. The level of craftsmanship reflects the high standards of German optical engineering from this era. The item shows a rich, aged patina throughout the brass; however, there is notable oxidation, surface scratches, and abrasions throughout the metal surfaces. Despite surface wear, the adjustment screws and leveling plates appear to be present and functioning properly.
