Bidspirit auction | Antique Townson & Mercer Radiometer

Antique Townson & Mercer Radiometer - This fascinating early 20th-century scientific demonstration apparatus, specifically a Crookes radiometer or light mill variant designed for classroom physics demonstrations, was manufactured by the prominent firm Townson & Mercer Ltd. of London, E.C., as verified by the circular brass maker's makers badge on the wooden plinth seen in image_4.png. The instrument features a central brass vane assembly mounted on a horizontal axis with turned ebonized wood handles at each end, supported by vertical clear glass or acrylic insulating pillars and a central T-bar, all securely mounted to a finished rectangular mahogany base. A large, protective square glass shield divides the apparatus. Presenting in excellent vintage condition, the wood base retains a rich luster with minimal surface scuffs, the brass components exhibit a warm, authentic age patina, and the glass shield is intact with no major chips or cracks, though light superficial cleaning may be desired. H 11.5”, W 19”, D 7”. Please see photos for condition. From the Dale Beeks collection.
