Vintage USGS Short & Mason Altimeter - Vintage USGS Short & Mason Altimeter This professional-grade surveying aneroid altimeter was manufactured by the renowned firm Short & Mason of London, a name synonymous with high-precision meteorological instruments since the 19th century. Stamped with ”USGS,” this piece was a standard-issue tool for the United States Geological Survey, likely dating to the early-to-mid 20th century. The instrument features a sophisticated ”compensated” movement to account for temperature fluctuations, housed in a handsome, deep-patina leather carrying case with a velvet-lined interior and an integrated magnifying glass for precise scale readings. Included is an original USGS calibration card dated ”5-11-71,” adding significant provenance for the serious scientific instrument collector. The leather case shows moderate surface wear, scuffing, and age-related darkening consistent with field use, though the leather snaps remain in good, functional condition; the instrument itself appears well-preserved with a clear dial and intact glass, though the internal mechanism is untested for accuracy. H 6.5”, W 5.75”, D 2.75”. Please see photos for condition. From the Dale Beeks collection.
