Bidspirit auction | Stanley ”Eltham” 1949 British Theodolite

Stanley ”Eltham” 1949 British Theodolite - This is a remarkable example of post-WWII British precision engineering: a Stanley ”Eltham” theodolite, instrument No. 5143, dated to approximately September 1949. Manufactured by W.F. Stanley & Co. Ltd. in New Eltham, London, this transit instrument features a robust black-enameled brass body with polished brass adjustment knobs and micrometers. The set is impressively complete, housed in its original fitted mahogany transport case with the factory instruction card, a plumb bob with line, a cleaning brush, and modern clamps. The horizontal limb reads to 10” via micrometers, and the vertical limb reads to 30” with integrated magnifiers. The item is in excellent vintage condition; the black finish shows only minor age-related thinning at the edges, and the brass components possess a soft, natural patina. The mahogany case shows appropriate wear, including minor scuffs and ink markings, and is missing its original key. The optics remain fairly clear and the mechanical movements function as intended. H 7”, W 17.25”, D 8.75”. Please see photos for condition. From the Dale Beeks collection.
