E.R. Watts & Son London Transit Theodolite W/Key - This precision E.R. Watts & Son Ltd. (London) transit theodolite, serial no. 31274, is a superb example of mid-20th-century British engineering. Finished in a functional military-style olive drab, the instrument features high-quality brass and steel construction with integrated spirit levels and finely graduated scales for horizontal and vertical measurements. The mahogany case is specifically marked ”US Govt Security Storage” on the exterior, indicating a fascinating history of official government or military service. It comes complete with its original fitted mahogany transport case featuring green felt lining, the original key for the functional locking mechanism, and a protective canvas outer cover. Internal maintenance accessories including a brush and plumb bob are also present. The ”Stadia Constant” label inside the lid confirms its technical specifications for distance measurement. The instrument appears to be in excellent vintage condition with minor surface wear to the paint and brass consistent with field use; the mahogany case and canvas cover show light age-related wear but remain structurally sound.
