Bidspirit auction | Antique German L. Tesdorf Surveying
Antique German L. Tesdorf Surveying Level - his exceptionally fine late-19th-century scientific instrument represents a peak era of precision European engineering. Manufactured by the renowned firm L. Tesdorf in Stuttgart, Germany, this scientific surveying transit/level features a beautifully preserved black-lacquered and brass construction with integrated spirit levels and finely threaded adjustment dials. The level is housed securely in its original fitted, dove-tailed wooden transit case, complete with its brass carrying handle, an interior mounted adjustment tool, a plumb bob/eyepiece component, and its highly desirable, original German-language instructional label pasted inside the door, dated March 1888 (”März 1888”). Mechanically, the dials and leveling components appear intact, though the instrument shows honest, light age-appropriate patina and surface grime to the brass, while the wooden case displays minor scratches, scuffs, edge wear, and age checking consistent with field use; the original lock mechanism is missing its key. H 9.5”, W 10.5”, D 5.5”. From the collection of Dale Beeks. Please see photos for condition.
