Bidspirit auction | Antique K&E Theodolite & Tripod
Antique K&E Theodolite & Tripod Set - This exceptional early to mid-20th-century surveying set features a vintage Municipal Triangulation Theodolite (Model No. 5086V, Serial No. 60603) crafted by the renowned Keuffel & Esser Co. in Hoboken, New Jersey. A premier instrument of its era, it boasts a sophisticated black and brass-finished construction complete with a detached 12-inch internal-focusing telescope unit, spirit levels, a heavy brass plumb bob in its leather holder, and its original technical catalog pages. Evidencing its historical provenance, the interior of the protective mahogany transit case features a ”Property of Purdue University” sticker. The set includes its original split-leg wooden tripod with a cast metal head displaying stamped inventory numbers. Objectively, the core surveying elements are structurally intact with functional mechanical elements and clear, intact spirit levels, though the optics remain untested for optical clarity. The set exhibits wear commensurate with age and field work; the mahogany case shows surface scuffs, a broken leather carrying handle strap, a missing lower door hook, edge wood chipping near the hinge line, and lacks a key for the locking mechanism. The tripod legs are structurally solid, though the leather buckle strap used to secure them when collapsed is broken, the tripod head shows expected paint chipping, and an unattached bronze tightening knob is included from the box interior. Case measures H 19”, W 10.5”, D 13.25”, Tripod measures H 58.5”, W 8”, D 8”. Please see photos for condition. Note: Pickup/Transport required. Contacts available Post-Auction.
