WWII British Military Mark IV Theodolite - This Mark IV Tacheometer (Theodolite), manufactured by Watts, Freeman & Son (W.F.S.) around 1944, is a rugged piece of Allied field gear marked with the British Broad Arrow and pattern number B 966. Finished in a non-reflective dark charcoal gray, this instrument was essential for Royal Artillery units to calculate precise firing coordinates and for Royal Engineers mapping terrain or establishing temporary airfields under combat conditions. The heavy-duty brass and steel construction was designed to withstand the rigors of the front line while maintaining surgical precision. The optics are notably clear and the original lens cap is present. Condition is characteristic of active military service, exhibiting oxidation on the exposed brass scales and age-appropriate thinning of the matte enamel on the leveling base and adjustment knobs.
