Antique Hahn Instrument Co. Mining Transit - This high-precision surveying transit is a fascinating cross-continental relic, featuring a compass dial marked for the Hahn Instrument Co. of Denver, Colorado, while explicitly noted as ”Made in Germany” with a distinct manufacturer's logo and serial number 2442. This collaboration points to a mid-20th-century era when American firms often imported superior German optics and movements to serve the western mining industry. The instrument is a study in functional contrast, combining a rugged white-enameled telescope housing with fine brass and silvered adjustment scales. Included with the transit is a magnifying loupe and its original fitted mahogany case (no key present), which still retains its protective interior blocks. The overall condition is impressive for a field instrument; the compass needle seats correctly, and while there is minor enamel loss and brass oxidation consistent with professional use, the mechanical components appear well-preserved. The wooden case shows typical surface scuffs and age-related wear to the finish. H 4.75”, W 8.75”, D 7.25” Please see photos for condition. From the Dale Beeks collection.
