Antique Gundlach 1876 Brass Microscope - This late 19th-century monocular microscope is an exceptional example of American scientific innovation, designed by Ernst Gundlach of Rochester, New York. The lacquered brass body tube is prominently hand-engraved with his landmark ”Pat. Oct. 3, 1876” patent date along the arm, and the objective lens is elegantly scripted with the Gundlach maker's mark. Built with a heavy, black-finished cast iron horseshoe base, the instrument features a rack-and-pinion coarse focus, a square stage, a rare rotating under-stage wheel diaphragm, and a sub-stage mirror. It is complete with its original fitted mahogany storage case featuring a brass carry handle, two brass objective containers with lids, one objective lens, and two distinct eyepieces that secure neatly within specialized door racks. Objectively evaluated, the microscope exhibits a beautifully aged patina with minor scattered lacquer loss, light surface scuffs, and natural wear across the stage surface and base from historical handling. The mahogany case remains structurally intact with functional hinges and exterior hardware, exhibiting expected surface scratches, light oxidation to the wood, and minor cosmetic nicks on the corners; no key is included for the case lock.
