Bidspirit auction | Antique Brass Abney Level F.W.
Antique Brass Abney Level F.W. & R. King - An exceptional piece of mid-to-late 19th-century American surveying history, this solid brass Abney level/clinometer was manufactured by F.W. & R. King of 226 Baltimore St., Baltimore, Maryland. Featuring an integrated spirit level vial and a vernier arc scale, the straightedge base is prominently stamped ”US. CE. C”, indicating official issue or property mark of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The instrument is housed in its original fitted mahogany box featuring an intact internal paper manufacturer's trade label detailing the firm's scope of engineers', surveyors', and optical instruments. The brass displays an attractive, warm natural patina with minor surface scratches and light scattered tarnish consistent with period field use, while the sighting tube and arc movement remain smooth and functional. The original wooden case shows age-appropriate exterior wear, surface scuffs, and minor edge wear, with the interior paper label remaining remarkably complete with light edge toning. H 2”, W 10.25”, D 5.25”. From the collection of Dale Beeks. Please see photos for condition.
