Antique Brass Prismatic Surveyor's Compass W/Case - This 19th-century scientific instrument is a high-quality, professional-grade brass prismatic surveyor's compass, likely of British or American manufacture. The device features a silvered dial with cardinal points, an integrated clinometer for measuring vertical angles, and a folding sighting vane with a prism for simultaneous viewing of the needle and the target. The heavy brass body exhibits a rich, authentic patina and remains housed in its original finger-jointed mahogany storage case with its protective deep purple velvet-lined insert. Though the instrument is unmarked by a specific manufacturer—a common occurrence for ”trade” instruments sold by retailers—the craftsmanship suggests a maker of high repute such as Stanley or Francis Barker. The instrument appears well-preserved with smooth mechanical movements; however, the brass shows minor surface oxidation and the wooden case has light scuffing and age-related wear consistent with field use.
