Bidspirit auction | West London Surveying Transit And

West London Surveying Transit And Case - An impressive piece of 19th-century English precision engineering manufactured by West at 92 & 93 Fleet Street, London, as hand-engraved on the base plate. Crafted from brass and oxidized metal, this surveyor's transit features a main telescope with fine adjustment knurling, an integrated functional compass, a vertical arc, dual spirit levels, and a four-screw leveling base. The instrument is complete with its fitted original wooden transport case featuring brass hardware, though it is missing its leather carrying strap (securing loops remain attached). The compass is in working order and the optical system is fairly clear. Visually, the vial for the spirit level at the front of the base is cracked, and a wooden internal accessory compartment piece is loose inside the box. The wooden carrying case exhibits age-appropriate surface wear including scuffing, scratches, and finish loss, and lacks the key for its lock mechanism. H 12 1/2”, W 9 3/4”, D 6 1/4”.
