Antique Weston Model 324 Galvanometer - This exceptional Model 324 galvanometer is a master class in late 19th-century engineering, manufactured by the Weston Electrical Instrument Co. of Newark, N.J. Bearing a very early serial number of 215, this instrument features foundational patents starting from November 6, 1888, marking Edward Weston’s transition to the revolutionary ”dead-beat” moving-coil design. The mahogany case and glass top house a sophisticated internal movement, including a hand-calibrated scale indicating a resistance of 258.8 ohms—a bespoke specification for high-precision laboratory or telegraphy ”null” measurements. The unit utilizes a permanent horseshoe magnet and hairspring torque system, a design that replaced finicky tangent galvanometers by providing immunity to the Earth’s magnetic field. It retains its original black knurled binding posts and a base-mounted zero-adjustment screw. The item is in excellent vintage condition, showing only light age-related oxidation on the brass-on-black nameplate and minor shelf wear to the wood finish. H 3.5”, W 4”, D 7.25”.
