1883 Harmon Transit Level - This exceptional Victorian-era scientific instrument stands as a testament to late 19th-century American craftsmanship, custom-engraved by precision toolmaker John W. Harmon of Boston, Massachusetts. Designed as an artificer's leveling instrument, the brass transit features an integrated spirit level, a detailed graduated arc degree scale, adjustments via fine-threaded brass thumb screws, and a telescoping sighting tube, all stable on a dark finished iron base. The beautifully executed hand-script engraving on the dial limb explicitly reads ”John W. Harmon / Boston, Mass. / Patented June 23rd & July 17th 1883.” Showing wonderful age and historical character, the brass displays a rich, uncleaned golden-brown patina with scattered areas of green verdigris, light surface oxidation on the steel telescope extension sleeve, minor edge wear, and honest paint flaking along the rim of the heavy circular base.
