Guna Mola Blouse Roosters and Winged Creatures - Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s 16 x 17 inches A traditional Guna woman's blouse with two mola panels (front and back), worked in 3 layers of hand reverse applique, applique, and hand embroidery with rickrack trim. The blouse has a white, green, and turquoise floral printed cotton yoke and puffed sleeves, a red and black neck binding with a metal zipper closure, and a pale green and red striped hem band. On the front panel, six roosters with combs and upswept tails stand in two rows of three, each perched on a branching plant form and filled with scattered triangular cutouts. Domestic fowl are a familiar mola subject drawn from everyday village life in Guna Yala. On the back panel, six stylized creatures with outstretched wings are arranged around two tall, vertical stalk forms that divide the panel. The creatures' bodies and the ground are filled with small triangular cutouts, giving the whole design an even, textured rhythm.
