Antique c1840 Mariners Compass Quilt - Antique c1840 Mariners Compass Quilt measuring 87 by 88 inches. It is comprised of 16 blocks, 17.5 by 18 inches, set straight, 4 by 4, with 5 1/2 inches off white sashing and pieced Square in a Square cornerstones. It is hand pieced, hand appliquéd, hand reverse appliqué, and hand quilted. Thin cotton batting and an off white cotton reverse. The edge is narrowly finished with the back brought to the front, applied by hand. Wonderful fabrics include chintz, early fugitive purple, Prussian blue, early pink, and more. Double process green print is showing minor color loss to blue in a couple of areas. The quilter used the off white sashing areas to exhibit her quilting skills with a variety of motifs including arcs, clamshells, other motifs and more.
