Vintage c1920s Silk Crazy Quilt Top With 2 Companion Pieces - Vintage c1920 Silk and Velvet Crazy Quilt Top with 2 companion pieces, made by Mary Elizabeth McDougall Hopler of Flanders, NJ. The quilt top measures 71 by 86 inches, the crochet trimmed piece measures 22 by 31 inches, and the smallest piece measures 18 by 16 inches. All three are worked in the same palette of gold, orange, amber, and cream silk satins with scattered patches of navy, maroon, green, pink, and pale blue, and with silk velvet in several places. The patches are irregular and are laid on a plain tan cotton foundation, turned under and stitched down by hand, and the main top is built in large foundation blocks joined together. Every seam is covered with hand embroidery in herringbone, cross, feather, buttonhole, and chain stitch, with worked star and asterisk motifs, and many patches carry embroidered floral sprays with raised French knot and bullion rosebuds in red, pink, yellow, and blue. The main top and the smallest piece have raw unfinished edges. The 22 by 31 inch piece is finished all around with a light blue crochet edging worked in a scalloped loop and attached with a buttonhole stitch. A later hand inked cotton label is stitched to the work reading Gold Satin Crazy Quilt c. 1916 to 1925, Made by Mary Elizabeth McDougall Hopler, b. Newark, NJ 1856, d. Flanders, NJ 1936, lived most of her life in Flanders, NJ, member of Flanders Methodist Church, blind last 7 years of life, also hooked rugs.
