Antique c1840 Printed Textile Cotton Chintz - Antique c1840 Printed Cotton Chintz in a pillar print, English, of the type printed as a furnishing fabric. It measures 60 by 23 inches. It is printed on a light blue ground in madder red, crimson, maroon, chrome yellow, orange, and green. The design runs in vertical stacks of fluted classical columns banded with ornamental scrollwork, each column capped by a cluster of cabbage roses, peonies, and chrysanthemums with turning autumn foliage, and the blue ground between the columns is filled with trailing sprays of small yellow centered wild roses and leaves. The printing combines fine engraved line, stipple, and cross hatch in the reds and maroons with flat blocked yellow and green. A glaze appears to remain across parts of the surface.
