Antique c1860s Applique Quilt Top - Antique c1860 Floral Applique Quilt Top with stuffed work, made by Lida Livingston Bellinger. It measures 80 by 91 inches. It is comprised of individual applique sprays set in a grid on a pieced plain white ground, with one large red papercut design of hearts and arrows set left of center and occupying a 2 by 2 area about 24 inches square. An undulating green vine runs around all four sides in a border, with green ivy leaves, red buds, and clusters of red berries worked along it. The sprays are roses, tulips, star flowers, berry branches, and leafy stems, cut from a solid green, a red ground print with small white clover figures carrying a blue dot, and a light pink print. It is hand appliqued, hand stuffed from the back for a raised three dimensional surface, and the stems and tendrils are hand embroidered in blue and tan threads in chain and outline stitch. A quilt documentation project label numbered 204 is stitched to the piece, reading Owner's Name Mrs. L. L. Brockway, Made by Lida Livingston Bellinger, Date made 1860 to 80, and noting that the off center pattern suggests it may have been made for a wall bed.
