Bidspirit auction | Antique c1880-1990 Hexagon Star Quilt
Antique c1880-1990 Hexagon Star Quilt - Multi Generational c1880 to 1992 Hexagon Star Quilt of Pennsylvania origin. It measures 77 by 85 inches. The top dates to about 1880 and the quilt was finished by the Annapolis Quilt Guild in 1992, so over a century of work is present in the one quilt. It is comprised of hexagon star blocks, set straight and staggered in horizontal rows, roughly 8 across by 11 down, with chrome orange print triangles filling between the hexagons and partial hexagons along the 2 sides. Each star is pieced from six diamonds with six triangles filling the corners of the hexagon, and every star uses a different combination of period prints, including madder browns, double pinks, indigo blues with white figures, shirtings, black grounds with red flowers, Turkey red checks and plaids, and one red and green print on a blue ground that reads earlier than the rest. The setting fabric throughout is a chrome orange, or cheddar, ground with a small black diamond print. It is hand pieced and hand quilted, in 1992, outlining the diamonds and hexagons and following the setting triangles, in a white thread that shows against the darker prints. There is a modern batting of low to medium loft and a small scale off white calico reverse printed with brown and red flowers, both added in 1992. The edge is finished with an applied solid gold binding. A hand embroidered label is stitched to the reverse reading The Annapolis Quilt Guild, Antique Hexagon Star c1880, origin Pennsylvania, Recently Quilted 1992, Quilt Documentation Project 1989.
