Reynolds Beal (1867-1952) ”Guyama, Puerto Rico 1921” - Reynolds Beal (1867-1952) Watercolor on paper depicting ”Guyama, Puerto Rico” and dated 1921, piece measures 6 3/4 x 9 1/2 and 16 1/2 x 20 1/2 inches w/frame. Provenance: Guyama: Estate of the artist; Estate of Helen Beal; Shore Galleries, Boston. Guyama with pale staining. Otherwise good condition. Not examined out of frame. Reynolds Beal was an American artist, first an Impressionist, then a Modernist, Marine Environmentalist, and brother of the New York Alpha Chapter of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity at Cornell. The elder brother of co-painter Gifford Beal, was born in New York City or the Bronx. Reyn and his brother Gifford spent their summers at Wilellyn at Newburgh, New York, and on the Hudson River. Beal was a man of independent means, and was thus able to devote his life to his art without having always to appeal to the tastes of his patrons or to contemporary trends. In fact, Beal was thought of as ”one of the adventurous experimenters” of his day and was considered ”Modernist”. Today he is recognized as being an important American Impressionist. Beal was active in the art community. He was a member of the American Watercolor Society, the Society of American Engravers, the Salmagundi Club, National Arts Club, and in 1909 was elected an Associate Member of the National Academy of Design. Also, the progressive artist that he was, he founded the Society of Independent Artists and the New Society of Artists, which consisted of fifty of the most important painters of the day, including George Bellows, Childe Hassam, Maurice Prendergast, John Sloan, and William Glackens Condition: The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects.
