Louise J. Rayner (1832 - 1924) United Kingdom - Louise J. Rayner (1832 - 1924) Watercolour heightened with white on paper depicting busy English street scene, signed lower left, piece measures 10 x 14 and 20 x 23.5 inches w/frame. Louise Rayner was born in Matlock Bath in Derbyshire. Her father, Samuel Rayner, was a watercolour artist of some repute and at the age of fifteen, Louise began to study painting seriously. One of her teachers was David Roberts, the Scotttish artist who specialised in architectural and topographical scenes.Rayner, like Roberts, depicted cities and ruins as well as stately homes and their surroundings. Rayner loved painting topographical views of cities; she travelled extensively throughout Britain each summer during the 1870s and 1880s, and also visited northern France. The present watercolour, depicting the famous street Wyle Cop in Shrewsbury, is quintessential of Rayner's style with it's careful detail and picturesque charm. Rayner beautifully captures the 'olde worlde' character of Shrewsbury. Condition: The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects.
